For this assignment I tried to attach a picture, it came as a tri-fold in one of my health magazines somewhere around the year 2000; I’ve had it on my wall next to my treadmill ever since. The ad depicts a model who is in very nice shape, thin, but not waify standing next to what appears to be railroad tracks. She is out in the country and she is wearing very short cut-off denim shorts as well as a cropped camisole type top. Her hair is a little tousled giving the ad a more “see I’m like you” type feel. The ad has a little “Levi’s” tag in the corner…nothing else. To me this ad says “if you wear our clothes, you can look like this you can be cool and comfortable as well as we have a sexy seductive side.”

Since this ad came from a women’s magazine the target audience would be women, mostly in their 20’s and 30’s, but with it hanging in my house it hasn’t escaped the eyes and comments of the boys that live there or come thru my house so there is definitely an appeal there.

Because this ad is sponsored by Levi’s the goal would be to get people to buy their products. What this ad says to me, is that it is promising me that if I buy Levi jeans, then there is something about me that will be sexy and seductive and I can look this great too. The fact that this ad is also shot out away from everything with only railroad tracks and what appears to be orchards in the background also says that if I wear Levi’s I can let my hair down, hang loose and be comfortable. The advertisers achieve this goal by choosing a model who is pretty, but not over the top beautiful; she is someone who could be a “girl-next-door” type so we can identify with her and then picking a background that portrays being away from it all.

Obviously this ad worked for me because I kept it around for 8 years. Maybe it didn’t quite do what the advertisers had expected because I use it more as motivation more than anything else, but then again…maybe it did what it was supposed to because even at my age I would love to look that good in a pair of jeans!!!
