Mary Kay is not new on the market. The company has been around for 45 years. Mary Kay, in fact, is now dead and her company lives on carrying her name into the future. I sat thru a three hour Mary Kay presentation for this assignment where the consultants tried to persuade me to become a new consultant for the company. The argument for me to join this company was, by becoming a Mary Kay consultant I can make lots of money with little effort, while using their premier products.
“Why would I want to become a consultant?” was my question when all of this started? I was given many reasons but these were the top ones.
1. Mary Kay is the greatest company to work for because: they donate much to charities (they are so compassionate).
2. You can do it on your own time and your own schedule.
3. It’s very team building, lots of friends to be had and made in this business.
4. Working with women is so much fun…who wouldn’t want to work with women!
5. Life is so good if you sell Mary Kay because you are free to make your own decisions and not have them made for you.
6. You will make money,
7. You will gain self-confidence,
8. You can earn a car (remember pink Cadillac’s?)
9. You can earn advancement and be your own boss.
What do I need to do to sell the product, was my next question. “Oh, the product will sell itself” was my answer. “Everyone who tries Mary Kay products adore them so all you have to do is have your clients try them and your clients don’t have to be your family and friends”. I wasn’t told till much later I would have to buy a $100 starter kit so I can have samples for others try then if I want to be really successful I have to open my own “store” and carry about $4000 work of products so my clients won’t have the wait time when they want product.
After our little pep talk on selling the product we were each given the opportunity try the some. I like Mary Kay products, but the bottom line is, I don’t need the extra money right now, I don’t have the time. Selling Mary Kay might be enticing to others, but not to me.
