Historical Speech

This speech was given by Rush Limbaugh February 28, 2009. Even though it’s not “historical” yet, it will be because it was profound, thoughtful and addressed the issues Conservatives should be addressing.

1. What is the argument? What is a conservative… or in Enthymeme format: What are the consequences of NOT living our conservative values on the future of our nation?

2. Audience: The speech was given at a CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) but it was publicized so it was mean to fall on all ears. Mainly conservatives in the US but there are so many pokes at the liberals he had to want them to be his audience also.

3. Goal: I felt this was a call to action by Rush Limbaugh. We have sat and watched these left winged liberals cry, and whine, cheat and steal, take away our rights and compromise that which is precious to us and yet we sit by. If we want change, we need to make it happen because we, as a nation voted for change, but it’s not going to be the change that will bring unity to our world, and make us feel safe in this great country we live in.

4. How: (Ethos, Pathos, Logos). Rush is a gifted speaker; arrogant, yet, and sometimes quite obnoxious. I don’t agree with everything he says, but he is eloquent in his words and well backed in the things he says. Because of these reasons he gets credibility because he’s earned it. He uses emotion in the stories he tells, the people he uses as examples. He evokes some fear in the heart (as should be because we have let these dredges of society run our country and pass laws that take away our freedoms and values) but he also incites the emotion on needing our wanting to get involved. And lastly, Rush is almost always logical. He talks about who we are, what we represent and what we should be doing. He contrasts what is being done now, and how it has faired in history to do things in these ways and what it will mean for our future. He doesn’t berate or degrade, he speaks fact and lets the listener interpret as he/she will.

5. Effective: Conservatives are still talking about this speech and he definitely got the ear of the liberals. They hate him more than they had Sadam Huissain and are trying to take them down with any tool they can. I wish there were more people like him.

Martina McBride - This One's for the Girls!

Martina McBride – This one’s for the girls

1. Argument – What are the consequence of being who you really are at any age on the women of our society?

2. Audience – Anyone of the female gender

3. Goal – To let women know that they are great no matter what age they are and they have so much to offer. As women I feel we get discouraged from time to time because we feel we are not old enough, or we’re too old, the time is not right to do this or that. Martina McBride’s song is saying whatever age you are at, enjoy it, be the best you can be.

4. How – The works of Martina McBride stand on their own. She has so much power and energy in her songs and they all have very profound meaning. Ethos/Pathos/Logos.

a. Ethos – The credibility issue comes from the singer being a woman herself. She inserts herself into the video as “one of the girls” which means she can have compassion for all the women she is singing about because in one way or another she has had these same thoughts and emotions.
b. Pathos – The emotion in this video is the energy. It’s a feel good song while singing about feeling good and being the best you can be at any point in your life.
c. Logos – The words of the song are what give it it’s logicality; hang on to your virtue as a teen, don’t lose sight of your dreams and a young women, your laugh lines show wisdom, not age, we’re all the same inside no matter what age we are at…They are all words of wisdom.

5. Is it effective? Do to the wide popularity of Martina McBride (yes, I know there are non-country people out there, but this one crosses lines) it’s effectiveness comes across as a feel good song. At the end of the song and video the listener feels good about who she is. I always judge the effectiveness of a song or movie by how I feel at the end…if I feel like humming the tunes…it was good for me.

1. Argument – What are the consequences of finding a piece of paper with a million numbers on it in a capsule that has supposedly be sealed for 50 years on the society around them?

2. Audience – Anyone who likes action/adventure.

3. Goal – The goal of the trailer is to get you to come see the movie. They do this by creating an sense of action and adventure as well as suspense. The trailer shows fear and misgiving in the voices of the people talking throughout the trailer yet the scenes show action letting you know that the movie has a little bit of everything.

4. Ethos/Pathos/Logos –

a. Ethos – Is it credible? Although I struggle a bit with Nicholas Cage, he is a very well known actor and having his name attached to it draws in the viewer at least to take a look. If the trailer makers can get the audience to at least look, the merits of the trailer should get them to want to see the movie. I like the usage of the child in the movie which says maybe this might be a fun movie for the teen generation also.
b. Pathos – This trailer creates quite a few emotions. You trust the lead character because he is a teacher and a father, you have fear because there is danger involved, there is anxiety because you don’t know why all these events are happening or why and all these emotions are brought to the surface.
c. Logos – I struggle with the logicality of all of this. It’s a Sci-Fi Adventure movie and with that you have to give it a little license to branch out into areas that might be a stretch for reality.

5. Effective – I guess the effectiveness will come through in how well the movie does at the box office. For me, as someone who enjoys Sci-Fi Adventure and Action movies, I and my husband (probably my older children also) will go and see it because the trailer looks fun.

Source for Paper B

1. Argument – What are the consequence of having unrestricted carry concealed weapons (CCW) permits on the safety of residential citizens. Should CCW permit holders be able to carry their weapons anywhere without prosecution of law? Would it increase the safety to residential citizens?
2. The audience I’m looking for is state legislators. I thought about broadening it some, but these are the people who make and work at changing the laws. I want them to know how I feel about the current laws.
3. Goal. – To make sure the laws in Utah stay put so we can have that undeniable right to bear arms to protect ourselves without fear of legal action.
4. How – My article is strictly logical based although I will site other articles that are more emotionally based. I’m citing the Firearms Laws for CCW Permit holder in Utah and it’s pretty clear cut…you do this…you cannot do this.
5. Is it effective? Anyone applying for such a permit has got quite a few hoops they have to jump thru. I’m sure it could happen, but the numbers of people who break these laws once they have done all they need to swearing to uphold them will be few.

Washington Crossing the Delaware

Argument: What is the price that was paid for our country’s freedom on the ordinary man who did that fighting?

Audience: Anyone who has an ounce of patriotism running in their blood.

Goal: To show the greatness of the men who fought for our freedom

How: This is a very emotional painting. The men struggling to break thru the ice so the boat can get over the river. Washington keeping his dignity as portrayed in his posture, the way his chin is held, his arms calmly folded across his chest. The flag is waving in the wind and the man holding it is struggling to keep it from falling into the water. So many of the men in the boat are represented with a different nationality symbolizing and coming together for a common cause. Also, the background shows the men and their boats coming out from the darkness where Washington’s boat is surrounded by light. Very emotional.

Although emotion is the strongest pull on this picture I think the credibility of having a strong leader like George Washington, the flag, the patriots who all fought, they all create a sense of credibility that makes this painting work. Anyone who has studied history will know that this painting is purely symbolic as so many of the elements were different in the reality of the events but because of the emotion involved, we give it a pass.

Effective: Of course, that is why I picked this picture. It makes the viewer feel that there is hope for the future, pride in what has been accomplished and gratitude for those who have sacrificed in giving this free country to us.

a. What are the consequences of working hard to provide everything for your children when they are young to the exclusion of not being there when they need you on who or what they will be come when they grow up?

2. Audience:
a. He’s singing to his son, but the message is to everyone who has small children and has put work above family.

3. Goal:
a. To let everyone know that you only get one chance at raising your children. If you let other things (worldly, material things) become more important in your life, your children will probably follow the example that was set for them and put those things first in their lives also. Put your family (children) first while they are young…it won’t wait till you have achieved your riches.

4. Pathos & Logos:
a. The writer uses the emotions of the listener as you hear the child say “I want to be like you, spend time with me dad” and the dad is too busy. Soon the roles are reversed and the dad wants to spend time with the son, but in reality the son has taken on the same values as the dad and he now is too busy to spend the time. It makes the listeners heart ache for the two to be together.
b. The logos part is that this is the example the dad has set and the whole time the boy is saying “I’m going to be like you, dad” and in the end he really is.

5. Effectiveness:
a. This song was a classic in it’s time (1974). Its effectiveness has been proven in the amount of times it has been used to create a scene or mood in movies and television shows. I can’t name any at this time but I know throughout the years I’ve heard it come on in the background to create a mood of loneliness or “what if.” It’s something most everyone can identify with because they do exactly that...stir the emotion.

Source for Paper A

What is the argument? What are the consequences of sending kids to charter schools on the quality of their education? Do kids in charter schools receive a better or more complete education than children who attend public schools?

Who is the audience? The particular article is speaking to psychologists who monitor the results of testing done on students so they can compare these results from one school to another and make conclusions regarding these results.

What is the Goal of this article? This article was downloaded from a National Charter School Website. With that information alone one can tell that the goal is to persuade the reader that Charter Schools are a better way to go rather than the public school system. Most of the information in the report talks about the better performance of Charter School Students vs. the Public School so even thought the information is presented in a very analytical manner, the object is still to let the reader know that Charter Schools are better than Public schools, academically.

How is the argument being made? Logos. This is a report full of numbers, computations and results; saying these are the numbers for A,B, and C and because of these numbers, here are the results. Clarity is also used as the report is laid out very logically, very clearly and each heading is labeled taking the reader from one area of study to the next.

Is this effective? Yes, this is effective. The reason I chose this article as part of my research is because the numbers were clear. Are Utah Charter Schools working like they should be?…the numbers tell with out having to guess what the underlying message is all about and I can transfer the hard facts to paint the picture of what I want to say thru these facts.
